The exploration attempts to find links between artificial intelligence and migration are numerous. In fact, technological solutions already facilitate the latter’s management, to a certain extent, within the European context and beyond.

Examples of Existent Applications

Technology in migration management frame is evident, with digital and AI applications used to the best possible administration of the subject. According to “The Use of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in Migration Management” report, solutions already in use are pertinent to:

  • Language and level detection.
  • Fraud.
  • Case management.
  • And, customer service.

In particular, German authorities in control (BAMF) make use of AI solutions for purposes related to ID verification, when there is document deficiency. Through language dialects detection, they identify the countries detection. In Latvia, the level of written and oral language is decisive to the citizenship processes; the identification occurs through tilde system.

On the other hand, Finnish migration authorities deployed AI to predict migration flow and for price assessment. Furthermore, both Finland and Latvia, used such solutions for efficient service provision, when concurrent.

Additional cases of implementation involve breeder document and national identity validation. Meanwhile, there is a pilot testing an AI application regarding border crossing management (iBorderCtrl).

Artificial Intelligence and Migration: Red Flags

Apparently, the connection between artificial intelligence and migration is still being probed. Therefore, monitoring and assessment of their processes is imperative, for the best possible use and control. There are many reasons for AI solutions not to be the single way of communication. For example, certain parameters can be critical, such as digital skills level and internet, to name a few. Moreover, there are cases of bias due to repetitive errors occurring.

Obviously, managing artificial intelligence and its applications are still a significant territory, but not fully discovered. However, since AI is implemented on cases that involve people, it is crucial that human rights should be assured.

The easyRights partnership probes AI and its potentials, as a facilitation tool for (im)migrants integration. In addition, human rights play a vital role in this initiative, to assist migrants with potential challenges met due to certain countries’ mechanisms.
