What is Interreg?

.Interreg: European Territorial Co-operation is one of the key instruments of the European Union (EU) to support cross cooperation between regions and countries through project funding.

With this collective effort, it wants to tackle the common challenges and find solutions in fields like health, environment, research, education, transport, sustainable energy and more, to help their economic and social development and tackle the obstacle of borders.

Geographical Coverage: Include all EU27 countries, Norway, Switzerland, and seven EU candidate countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine.

The sixth version of Interreg has an aggregate budget of €9.2 billion for 2021-27. This consists of €8 billion in ERDF funds, with the remainder derived from three Commission-managed instruments:

  • Interregional Innovation Investments
  • The European Urban Initiative
  • European Social Fund transnational cooperation (ESF+)

Highlight that 80% of the budget is concentrated on three policy objectives:

  • A smarter Europe
  • A greener Europe
  • A more social Europe

The remaining 20% supports other areas within the scope of cohesion policy.
