Young People and the Future of Work: Building Skills for a Changing Labour Market

youthpioneer blog

The transition from education to employment is becoming increasingly complex. Young people are entering a labour market shaped by digital transformation, the green transition and artificial intelligence, while also searching for meaningful careers that align with their values and aspirations.

The YouthPioneer project explores these challenges by working with young people across six European countries, including those who are not in employment, education or training (NEETs). Through research, stakeholder engagement and practical activities, the project promotes more inclusive pathways that help young people build confidence, develop relevant skills and successfully navigate the changing world of work.

The Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (iED) contributes to the project by supporting the development and dissemination of approaches that strengthen employability, lifelong learning and youth empowerment across Europe.

Preparing young people for the future requires much more than technical knowledge. It also means fostering adaptability, critical thinking, digital literacy, communication skills and resilience—qualities that are becoming increasingly important in today’s labour market.

The latest YouthPioneer article reflects on several key topics, including:

  • the transition from education to employment,
  • the impact of artificial intelligence,
  • future skills and employability,
  • mental well-being,
  • and how society can create more human-centred pathways into work.

Whether you are an educator, youth worker, policymaker or simply interested in the future of youth employment, the article offers valuable insights grounded in both project experience and recent European research.
