One of the major factors that can shift things in society is science. Scientific research and groundbreaking discoveries have been the reason for some of the world’s most known societal changes. However, it is not just the impact of science and technology on society that is evident. Society is influencing science just as much.
Society infuencing science
The most common way that society is influencing science is through a generally accepted social views, values and priorities that can put pressure on all the scientific and technological developments. At the same time, it has been proven, through research and experimentation that, the active involvement of citizens on scientific matters, also known as citizen science, help speed up processes and produce better and clearer results in many scientific fields.
Through the implementation of big European Frameworks, the EU is trying to establish new ground rules that will connect science with society even further. The Horizon 2020 calls for proposals provide organizations all over Europe to apply their innovative ideas and bring new methodologies that will bring better results.
To respond to the increased interactions between the different Research and Innovation stakeholders in the society, important institutional changes need to be made. These changes will allow citizen input on scientific matters to be accepted a lot easier by the scientific community. Some examples include citizen science, co-creation of public policies, agenda setting in research and innovation programmes, co-production of research and innovation content, and co-evaluation of proposals, activities or other R&I funding decisions.
The Horizon 2020 Call
The ‘’Grounding RRI practices in research and innovation funding and performing organizations’’ call, under the Horizon 2020 financial framework, is aimed at achieving good practices, all around Europe that will help these changes be made. In particular, good practices are in terms of:
- Citizens’ and citizens’ association’s engagement in science;
- Formal and informal science education;
- Gender equality in science;
- Research ethics and integrity;
- Open access to research results.
These five good practices are easy, sustainably and efficiently implemented when the organizations behind the proposals, have made sure to adapt their frameworks to ensure an institutional change process.
The consortia of partners that will take on this proposal, will a lot to work for. They are expected to implement institutional changed in at least one of the fields mentioned above. Optimally their proposals will include all five fields and will implement the same groundbreaking changes in all of them. These changes will need to be sustainable, of course, beyond the lifetime of the project funding itself.
What will the organizations do?
The organizations address in this action are organizations either funding or performing activities in the field of R&I as a central activity. Experience in the processes of institutional change is not obligatory but it is recommended. The organizations taking part in this project are expected to ensure true engagement and thorough results. The past experience could be helpful.
There are many different aspects of the way science and society can be matched. One of those ways is entrepreneurship. Through entrepreneurship, science can be promoted. At the same time, science can affect entrepreneurship and its development. Therefore it is of utmost importance that every proposal for this call will include an entrepreneurial activity and have an expert on entrepreneurship as part of the consortium
