SAHHim project was created to improve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of students with special needs (SSN) and their teachers on how to stay healthy and happy in times of crisis. For this reason, together with our project partners, we created this easy-to-read interactive book to serve SAHHim’s target groups. Let’s look at the SAHHim interactive book and learn more about its content and how you can access it.
Improving the Daily Life of Students with Special Needs
The interactive digital book created during the SAHHim project deals with developing practical skills in the psychomotor intervention of children with special needs and enhancing healthy lifestyle behaviours in these students.
It includes strengthening, stretching, postural exercises, cardiovascular endurance, balance and coordination, and core stabilization. The main topics of the SAHHim interactive book are the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating, stress management and activities to maintain mental health.
The Content of the SAHHim Interactive Book
The SAHHim interactive book is divided into 5 units, each one dealing with a different topic. The units of the book are the following:
- Unit 1: Introduction to the book— This unit introduces the project and its contents. It also stresses the importance of healthy living, which can lead to better physical and mental health, academic performance, and social skills. Read the first unit here.
- Unit 2: Physical activities—This unit discusses physical activity and its significant benefits, such as brain health and weight management. It also distinguishes between types of exercise, such as strengthening, stretching, posture, cardiovascular endurance, balance and coordination, and stabilization. Finally, the most important part of this unit is that each type of exercise suggests a number of exercises and provides a guide for their execution. Read the second unit here.
- Unit 3: Healthy Nutrition—Unit 3 is all about Healthy Nutrition. It discusses the importance of eating healthy and how it helps daily. Moreover, it discusses healthy foods, helping students distinguish between what is bad and good to eat. Finally, it discusses hydration and gives tips on strategies to use to make healthy eating a piece of cake. Read the third unit here.
- Unit 4: Stress Management—Unfortunately, stress follows us throughout life. However, knowing what causes stress and how to manage it can help us put it under control. Therefore, this unit teaches students with special needs about stress and its causes and effects. Additionally, it provides relaxation activities, exercises to relax tension in the neck and cervical area, and strategies to cope with stress. Read the fourth unit here.
- Unit 5: Mental health—Mental health helps us deal with the adversities of daily life, and that is especially true for special needs students. That’s why their educators, caregivers, and physicians need to know how to support them in improving their mental health. Additionally, this unit provides strategies to maintain mental health and available resources to seek help for mental health issues. Read the fifth unit here.
On top of the SAHHim interactive book, the consortium also developed a comprehensive guide covering the following topics:
- Physical Activity
- Nutrition
- Stress Management
Download the guide from here in PDF format.
Additionally, we created a series of educational videos focusing on physical activity, exercise, stress management and healthy eating. These videos are valuable resources for both students and educators. You can find all SAHHim deliverables on the project’s website.
