The objective of the “Sustainable Service in DS” (SSinDS) Erasmus+ project was a difficult and ambitious one from the start. Sustainability is a hot topic right now, the same as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For this reason, the core idea behind the project’s development was to expand the base of the actors involved in achieving the SDGs with more unlikely players.
For this project, these players were the people with Downs Syndrome who have long been beneficiaries rather than agents for achieving the SDGs. The SSinDS project decided to change that.
There are over 6 million people worldwide with Downs Syndrome, and there is a lot of talk about their social inclusion and activation in society. However, this idea never really gained traction due to a lack of awareness of the capacities of persons with Downs Syndrome (PDS), knowledge and tools to implement a sustainable service-learning approach for them.
SSinDS was probably a pioneer project dealing with this with multiple benefits to society; the social inclusion of PDS and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
As we are nearing the project’s end date, reflecting on what has been done so far, we can only be proud of what has been accomplished. Both in terms of project results and our impact on the PDS’ social inclusion.
We want our legacy to be a sustainable service for people with Down’s Syndrome based on the service learning approach combining service and reflection in a structured learning environment.
