Education for Sustainable Development: On Becoming Environmentally Conscious

Education for Sustainable Development: On Becoming Environmentally Conscious

We obviously are heading towards a future, where due to the limited natural resources, education for sustainable development (ESD) is an imperative. We need to channel our motivation and effort towards learning and living in a sustainable manner. Hence, we will face the root problem with quality education.

The Overall Objective of Education for Sustainable Development

UNESCO is planning an inclusive, quality education on the subject of sustainability. This design boils down to the transformation of education. The reshaped education, in its turn, will lead to the provision of knowledge and cultivation of skills, values, and mindset conscious to the climate change. Therefore, it is a plan with a long-term goal towards a sustainable world, with respect to cultural differences.

Sustainable Development Goals: Numbers 4, 11, 12 and 13

The United Nations have spotted the need for a sustainable development; and, responded with the development of an Agenda of seventeen (17) goals. Education for sustainable development contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG Number 4: “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. This SDG is aiming at promoting equal educational opportunities for all; it also includes the cultivation of environmentally conscious mentality.
  • SDG Number 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. Transforming our mentality will inevitably lead into transforming other aspects of our lives and our cities.
  • SDG Number 12: “Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”. This goal is linked with an updated education system that promotes sustainability.
  • SDG Number 13: “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”. As it is aforementioned, with the promotion of pertinent education, it is another step towards fighting environmental threats.

Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (iED) acknowledges and supports the vision of facing this problem. Our institute participates and is active in many European projects regarding this topic. However, we strongly believe in team efforts. Therefore, we invite you to contribute with your ideas. We would gladly cooperate with you.
