How to deal with anxiety in the workplace

workplace anxiety

Anxiety can be a major negative factor in the workplace. Suffering from anxiety disorder could be something you are not even familiar with, before you find yourselves in a stressful situation. And the workplace can be a stressful place from time to time. Now dealing with your anxiety is something that can take a very long time. But concerning the workplace, there are some things you can do in order to make your working days a lot easier.

Tell your employer

You can start off by telling your employer about it. This is completely up to you of course but if you know that you have anxiety disorder, then by telling your employer not only will you be able to ask for the right accommodations but you will also be able to educate people on this sensitive subject and how to deal with it in the workplace, that they might not be familiar with.

Tell someone you trust in the workplace

We all have that one person that we trust in the workplace. Maybe it is the coworker sitting next to us, the person behind us or even on the other side of the room. Find that person in your workplace and share your problem. They will understand and will be able to make working conditions a little bit easier.

Avoid toxic coworkers

Unfortunately, toxic coworkers can be a frequent phenomenon in the workplace, especially in big companies. And that is most certainly not good for your anxiety. You cannot escape them but you can always ignore the negativity and the gossiping. An easy way to do that is to just keep working.

Keep working

Working hard can do wonders for your self-esteem. When you work hard and you stay focused your results will be great. Sure, you will make some mistakes. Everyone does. But in time those mistakes will be less and less and they vanish completely.

Manage your time

One of the things that could cause your anxiety is being afraid that you will not make the deadlines. So why not make sure that you will be on time beforehand? Plan your time and your schedule ahead and stick to your program. Make to-do lists. Prioritize your work. Give each task enough time to complete. It will work.

Be ready to deal with setbacks

Sometimes, no matter how good your schedule might be, there can be setbacks. And that can be stressful. What you must do is anticipate the problems. Think of solutions to potential situations before they occur. That way you will be prepared to solve or even prevent them.

Be realistic

Never commit to something you cannot do or do not have the time to do. Do not allow that extra anxiety following you around!

Ask for help if you need it

Feeling overwhelmed from time to time can be stressful. Do not be afraid to ask a coworker for help. But make sure that you will let them know they can count on you if they need you. You will return that favor. The workplace needs to be a place where you will feel supported by your coworkers.

Leave your work at the office

Your home is your sanctum. You do not need stress there. Bringing work at home is like carrying your stress with you back to your place.  Leave your workplace and your stress where they belong.

Celebrate your success

Learn to recognize your success. You worked hard for it and you deserve to celebrate with the people who helped you. Give yourself sometime before you move on to the next project.

Take a vacation

You need to fill your batteries. You need time for yourselves. By taking a vacation you will be rejuvenated and you will be calm and ready for work when you return in your workplace.

Stay healthy

Don’t be surprised to learn that your physical health can be a positive or negative factor to your anxiety levels. Eat healthy foods, make sure that you will get enough sleep and exercise whenever you find the time. Try to limit your caffeine and alcohol intake and in general keep your body and your mind in shape so that you can handle all the challenging situations

By following these steps, your anxiety levels are going to drop to the minimum. Every day will be a little bit easier for you until you reach that one point where anxiety in the workplace will no longer be a problem you will have to deal with.
