For or against in-company training?

In the conditions of a tough competition when the prices of goods and services are more or less the same the quality and the professionalism become of a high importance. The qualification of your staff should correspond to the requirements of the market. Thus, many companies have created special education centers for their employees. Are they really helpful? What are their advantages and disadvantages?

The advantages of in-company trainings

The trainings help to acquire the necessary skills in a given field. It is good to have such trainings in the companies that produce some products. The new-coming employees have to learn the technology which is used, especially if it is different from the standard one.

It is necessary to have an in-company teaching center in case your company has a special style of leading business. For example, you have developed unique selling techniques for your managers. They will not learn them anywhere but in your teaching center. If you want your language school to stand out from the pile of other schools, develop your own methodology of teaching and transfer it to your employees via in-company trainings.

The in-company trainings are necessary in case you work with a special software or devices and new employees will need to learn how to use them. It may be the case of SAP system usage.

It will be advantageous for your company and its employees to have the internal trainings of experience sharing. For example, some of your employees are gurus of Excel. They may share their tips and tricks with others and in will create an added value for them. It may also be the case of PowerPoint, Access, SAP, etc.

Although the disadvantages of the in-company trainings are not numerous, they still exist. First of all, the internal trainings created an additional workload for your employees. This is the case of the trainings on experience sharing which are led by the employees of the company. They have to spend time on preparation and the conduct of the training when they could be fulfilling their own direct tasks. If you have a separate training center, you have to pay its members a full-time salary, which is not the case for the coaches, who are hired for a given training. Thus, external trainings will save your money. In additionб they may bring fresh blood into your company and a detached view on your processes and strategies.

When deciding either to have or not to have the internal training center, consider all the arguments mentioned above and make your right decision.
