Horizon Europe, the programme that will succeed Horizon 2020, has an ambitious 100 billion euros budget, focusing on research and innovation. The provisional agreement for the Horizon Europe proposal was reached in March and April 2019 by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The agreement was finally endorsed on April 17th, 2019.
The strategic plan that will be set into motion for the implementation of Horizon Europe will focus in particular on the second pillar of the entire plan, the Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness pillar of Horizon Europe. It will also cover the Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area part of the programme as well as relevant activities in other pillars.
The second pillar has the following six very important point:
- Health
- Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society
- Civil Security for Society
- Digital, Industry, and Space
- Climate, Energy, and Mobility
- Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment
Bellow, you can find some important information on these six points, based on the research conducted for the predecessor of Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020. No official data has yet been released for Horizon Europe however, these key elements of these six points appear to remain the same so far.
- Health
Several activities will be conducted under various Horizon Europe calls aiming at enhancing active ageing by keeping older people active and independent. The calls will also contribute to the sustainability of health and care systems across Europe.
- Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society
In an effort to reduce inequality, social exclusion and the levels of poverty around Europe, Horizon Europe will introduce many new activities focusing on education, employment and training of people of all ages. Horizon Europe supports inclusive, innovative and reflective societies is a prerequisite for sustainable European integration.
- Civil Security for Society
The need to protect European citizens, society, and the economy as well as the European infrastructures and services, is still strong. Horizon Europe will aim at activities harboring solutions towards European prosperity, political stability, and well-being
- Digital Industry and Space
A lot of actions are being conducted all around the world towards innovation for the Digital Industry. At the same time, new technologies are evolving around the idea of Space Exploration. Horizon Europe will provide all project participants with the opportunity to become important stakeholders in this very innovative endeavor.
- Climate, Energy, and Mobility
Improving the well-being of the European citizens, as well as increasing security and competitiveness, are very important for the EU. Environmental integrity needs to be assured. Resilience and sustainability are also a must with the aim to keep average global warming below 2° C. All that in an effort to enable ecosystems and society to adapt to climate change and other environmental changes!
- Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment
One of Europe’s most important aims is the transition towards much more optimal and renewable use of all the biological resources thus ensuring sustainable primary production and processing systems. The systems that will be put into motion will aim at producing more food, fiber and other bio-based products. The aim is the production of all those without any severe environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions.
