An international effort and mass collaboration focused on the important matter of space exploration come every year in the form of the NASA Space Apps Challenge. The Space Apps Challenge is a hackathon that was first held in April 2012. It is a hackathon that serves the ideas of innovation on the field of technological achievements that can be used to promote space exploration for all different types of reasons.
This year and for the 3rd year in a row, the NASA Space App Challenge was held in the city of Larisa, Greece as well. The challenge was completed with utter success. The challenge was organized by the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development and the Biomimicry Greece – Research and Innovation.
This year, around the world, close to 30.000 people took part in the challenge, from over 70 countries and 200 cities. All those people helped to develop solutions for some of the earth’s greatest challenges using the NASA Open Data.
In Larisa, the Judge Committee consisting of Professor of the Department of Business Administration of the Technological Superior Institution of Thessaly, Mr. Panagiotis Fitsilis and the president of the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development Mr. Anastasios Vasiliadis, announced three winning teams. All the teams were part of the voting as well. The NASA Space Apps Challenge Larisa 2018 was held under the auspices of the Region of Thessaly, with the support of the Cultural and Science Dept of the Larissa Municipality, the University of Thessaly, the new Space Association GREEK NEW SPACE SOCIETY and other collaborating organizations.
The three winning teams claim the World Prize, a trip to the NASA space station. Also, IBM offered all groups free access to its services. Finally, the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development offered members of the first team the opportunity to travel free of charge in Europe to train and develop their idea.
