Important skills for young people to secure long-term employment

Employment

One of Europe’s most pressing matters is youth unemployment. Young people nowadays and in particular NEETs do not possess the skills needed in order for them to be able to secure a solid long-term employment in a company. However, these skills are essential if they wish to have a steady job and the potential of a bright future.

The list of skills is very long and it is nearly impossible for one person to have all of them. If we were to narrow down the list to the most important skills, these are the skills that we believe every young person should focus on.

  • Communication skills

People need to be able to work well with others. If a person does not have the right communication skills then that person is most likely not going to work well with others. That is one of the very first things that every employer is looking for. Developing the right communication skills is the first skill to pay attention to, for every young employee

  • Reliability skills

Being a reliable employee to your coworkers as well as your employer is very important. People in your work need to know that they are can depend on you and that you are a reliable person that will always complete its tasks. That will make you a very valuable asset to the company and thus secure your position in the office

  • Adaptability skills

Things in SMEs or big corporations change all the time. You might find yourselves in a completely different position than the one you started in. You need to be ready and able to adapt to your new tasks.

  • ICT Skills

Apart from being a good coworker and a reliable employee, you need to also have technical skills that will make you an important asset to the company. ICT skills are the most important nowadays. A potential employee without knowledge of ICT is most likely going to be treated as a burden for the company rather than an asset. Getting trained to acquire these skills will be very important for your professional development.

  • Learning Skills

This might sound like a vague skill but if you break it down you are going to find out that it might be a lot more important than what you might think. All skills change and develop according to the shifts of the market. You need to always keep training yourself and always remember that learning is always going to take you a long way, in a business. Be ready and willing to study and learn new skills and competencies or improve your old ones. Your employers are not just going to love what you can offer them but they will also appreciate your effort to make yourself better. That alone will make the company better.

By acquiring these skill you will be able to ensure a much steadier job, and long-term employment. As mentioned above thing in companies and corporations change all the time. You need to be able and ready to adapt to any change and always get the best out of every work situation. This needs to be your number one priority as a young person now entering the labor market.
